What is disaster recovery?

Disaster recovery is the process, policies and procedures related to preparing for recovery or continuation of technology infrastructure critical to an organization after a natural or human-induced disaster. With the increasing importance of Information Technology for the continuation of business critical functions, combined with the modern around-the-clock economy, the importance of protecting your organisations data and IT infrastructure in the event of a disruptive situation has become an increasing and more visible business priority in recent years. Do you have a plan?

Why should I be worried, I'm a small business?

Regardless of your business size you should be worried.... Of companies that have a major loss of business data, 43% never reopen, 51% close within two years, and only 6% will survive long-term. The question is “can you afford not to?” For more information, or to find out how E-mpower can help you and your business, please call us on 01444 250404

What about the rest of my business, it's not just IT?

We agree! A disaster recovery plan should be part of a bigger Business Continuity Plan that covers all aspects of your business.

What is an off site backup?

An offsite backup (also known as a remote backup) is a means of storing a copy of your valuable data on a backup device which is located in a separate geographical location. This could be a separate office you already have or in a central secure location such as a Data centre. In the event of a disaster such as theft or fire, you can rest assured that your key data is safely held elsewhere, allowing you to rebuild your business!

Why would I bother, my backups are in a fireproof safe..

Most fire proof safes offer a level of protection against fire damage for a relatively short period of time – normally 1 – 2 hours depending on design and quality. If your building suffers a major fire that takes a while to be discovered or put out it could be too late for the computer media that was being stored. Sadly you only find this out when it is too late!

Surely I will have to invest in new equipment?

Assuming you already have a internet connection like ADSL / Broadband then no additional hardware is required.

My current Backup is huge, how will an offsite backup cope?

Most companies have their ‘core’ data (e.g. accounts) that is business critical, without which the business could not run, then there is the ‘associated data’ that has been collected over a period of time. By only taking the ‘core’ data offsite your possible data loss liability has been greatly reduced. However it is still possible to back up your entire system. The initial backup process can take some time, because a full copy of the data must be encrypted, compressed and copied to the data centres. Further daily backups are significantly faster because file changes only are transmitted. These changes are typically at a 'block' level within a file i.e. if a change is made to a previously backed up document, only the change to that section is sent, not the whole document. We have various ways of capturing your data for remote storage, please call us on 01444 250404 for further information

What is a managed backup?

A managed backup system is where a trusted third party provider continuously monitors your backup system to ensure successful backups are completed as scheduled. This could be by remotely monitoring your existing backup strategy right through to the third party being in complete control of the backup(s) and the equipment utilised.

How will you know that the data is retrievable?

As part of the managed backup solution we regularly undertake a test restore of some random files to prove the validity of the backup. Also a complete list of each file contained within the backup can be provided to you to show what is (or is not) being backed up.

This sounds like it could be expensive!

This depends on how much you value your businesses data and how confident you are that it could survive following a major data loss...... only you can value this.

What is 24x7 Round-the-Clock Monitoring?

24x7 Round-the-Clock monitoring checks your critical systems every five or fifteen minutes at your option. Whenever it discovers a problem, it sends an email or SMS alert showing the exact nature of the problem directly to us. And it updates our WallChart, a large screen in our office that shows the exact status of all our Clients. We’ll see the true nature of the problem – rather than having to depend on your best guess. That means we can fix it faster – and radically boost your overall uptime.

What can you monitor?

Every five minutes, our 24x7 Monitoring will… *Check that your server is up and running. *Check that you can connect to the internet. *Check any or all of your Windows Services, vital components of your server’s operating system. Services provide, well, vital services that allow you to logon to your network, access the internet, even print your work. *Ping various network devices or remote offices that you need to do your work. *Check TCP ports on your network, on other networks or at your ISP. If any of these ports are failing to respond, you may be unable to connect and do your job. *Check disk space to ensure it’s below a set threshold. *Check RAID devices to ensure that all disks are functioning correctly and data is safe. *Check your website to ensure it’s up and running and serving your customers. *Check other devices using SNMP. If there’s a problem, we’ll be alerted instantly so we can take specific action to resolve the issue – almost always before you know you have one.

How will 24x7 monitoring help my business?

E-mpower IT 24x7 Round-the-Clock Monitoring turns conventional IT support on its head. Rather than wait for you to notice that a system has failed – often involving time-consuming ‘systems fiddling’ on your part – our 24x7 monitoring will alert us to problems at your sites. We’ll almost always know about a systems issue before you do, so we can fix it fast and minimize your business disruption. *Specific, informative alerts show us the exact nature of the problem. We can fix it faster. *Problems are almost always highlighted to us before you even know you have one. Uptime is maximized. *Alerts are routed to the right technician. He can fix it faster – and do it right the first time. *Alerts for mission-critical systems can be set by SMS day or night.

View the exact status of all your systems – anytime and anywhere

Your systems are your systems and we think you should be able to see the exact status of your computing resources – and how well we’re doing our job – at any time of the day or night. A Client Portal is an easy way to view your IT network and its current status. You’ll be able to login to your personalized website – even on your mobile phone – and see the issues that we’re working on at that time. You’ll see: *whether your antivirus is up-to-date *whether your backup has completed successfully *if your website is up or down *overall system health
